The word comes from Plato, the ancient philosopher. Apparently, Plato was like the Seinfeld character George in “The Abstinence.” He thought the highest form of relationship was one free from physical desire.

Mnemonic

You’re hanging out with someone you have a little crush on, and it’s going well. For second, you think you might kiss.

Then, he or she says, “wanna play tonic? It’s a tea party-type game where you drink imaginary tonic.”

At that point, you know the relationship is purely platonic.
